Veddriq Leonardo has made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning Indonesia’s first gold medal in men’s speed climbing, setting a new Asian record with an incredible time of 4.75 seconds. Leonardo narrowly defeated China’s Wu Peng, who earned the silver medal with a time of 4.77 seconds.

Leonardo’s victory is a significant milestone for Indonesia, showcasing the nation’s growing presence in the world of competitive climbing. Meanwhile, in the bronze medal match, American climber Sam Watson set a new world record with a time of 4.74 seconds, surpassing his own previous record and securing the bronze medal.

Watson had earlier broken his world record in the quarterfinals with a time of 4.75 seconds, but was narrowly defeated in the semifinals by Wu Peng. Watson rebounded in the bronze medal match, defeating Iran’s Reza Alipour to earn his place on the podium.

The women’s speed climbing event also saw records fall, with Poland’s Aleksandra Miroslaw winning gold and setting a new world record at 6.10 seconds. China’s Deng Lijuan earned the silver, breaking the Asian record with a time of 6.18 seconds, and capturing China’s first Olympic climbing medal.
